Georgia DOJ/DBHDD settlement hearing January 6, 2016

A DOJ/DBHDD settlement hearing with AMICI will be held Wednesday, January 6, 2016, at 2 pm in Senior U.S. District Judge Charles A. Pannell’s courtroom:

2367 Richard B. Russell Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse
75 Ted Turner Dr., SW
Courtroom #2307 (Please check on this room number at the building entrance.)
Atlanta, GA 30303
(see directions below)

The state feels they have complied with the DOJ Settlement.  As families representing our loved ones, we are saying, “no”,  we don’t agree. We are not there yet!
NAMI has been asked to share stories from families whose loved ones have been released from the hospital/jail to shelters, the streets or unsupervised environments since 2010.
If you have an experience you would like to share,  in brief,  please send it to Susie Kyle,, 404-906-0487.  I will need to hear from you before 1:30 pm today (Jan 5)!
Comments from Nora Haynes:
• AMICI (meaning friends of the court) is made up of mental health organizations such as The Carter Center, NAMI, GAO, MHA and Legal Aid.
• The hearing will pertain to dismissed patients from Georgia’s Mental Hospitals between 2010 and 2015 who were taken to a homeless shelter or put on the street at dismissal from the hospital. DOJ filed a complaint against the State pertaining to this. Judge Pannell has requested AMICI representatives attend this hearing; AMICI has been given standing in the court.
• Two attorneys from the Brazelon Center for Mental Health Law are representing AMICI. There will be other attorneys representing DOJ and the Georgia DBHDD in attendance.
• NAMI representatives attending the hearing are asked to wear green. This is the identity color for mental health and will indicate our advocacy.
• It is recommended people arrive at the Richard B. Russell Federal Building 1-hour before the hearing. Per Nora, it may take 30-minutes to go through the front door screening process. NOTE: Leave cell phones in your car. No cell phones are allowed in the building.

• The building is located on a section on Spring Street that has been renamed as Ted Turner Drive. It is at the corner of MLK Jr. Drive and Ted Turner Drive, a short walk from the MARTA Five Points Station and the old Rich’s building in downtown Atlanta.
