NAMI Family Support Groups

Too often, mental illness is an isolating experience accompanied by profound anxiety. One of the most important benefits of a support group is finding someone to talk to when things get tough. When your family member or friend is diagnosed with a mental illness, talking with someone to share the coping strategies and insights, as well as problems and concerns, can be an important link in the path of recovery.

JOHNS CREEK: meets FIRST and THIRD Sunday each month, 3:30 – 5:00 pm at Perimeter Church, 9500 Medlock Bridge Road, Johns Creek, Georgia 30097, in the school library.

Coping with mental illness can be confusing and frustrating for both the family and individuals confronted with a diagnosis of mental illness. Our NAMI Family Support groups offer much needed emotional support where family members can speak openly and honestly without fear of rejection or being judged.

In addition, they are also a source of practical advice on issues such as insurance benefits, social security and Medicaid, finding a lawyer or accessing treatment and housing. Our facilitators are training family members and friends who themselves have loved ones living with a mental illness. Whatever challenges you are facing, you are likely to find someone in our support groups who has “been there, done that” and can share their experience. You are not alone. They understand your daily challenges and can offer encouragement and support but are not trained professionals and any insight that they may provide is not intended to take the place of trained psychologists and psychiatrists.

Located in the local communities throughout Georgia, our support groups provide a place that offers respect, understanding, encouragement and hope.

They offer families and friends a casual and relaxed approach to sharing the challenges and successes of coping with mental illness. There is no need to register – just show up when you feel a need to talk with someone. All groups are confidential – you can share as much or as little as you wish.

Members come away with positive ideas for improving family situations. Facilitators are trained to guide the group toward problem solving through shared experiences.
